Reconnecting the Kirchberg Plateau with its forests: from April to July 2019, Quartier Stuff Grünewald asbl ran the Wild Wild Wald project and invited everyone across Luxembourg to discover the forests of Kirchberg.
An interactive map of Grünewald forest co-created by the participants of the Wild Wild Wald project.
The collection of nature-inspired art created by workshop participants.
The project received the ImpACT grant of the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and was supported by the Ministère de l’Environnement, Climat et du Développement durable as well as the Fonds de Kirchberg.
Objectives
Curious about the impact of the Wild Wild Wald project? Here’s what we’ve been up to in a nutshell.
- Connect Kirchberg inhabitants and visitors with surrounding nature and biodiversity of the area, expand the imaginary borders;
- Help kids, youths and adults meet and try diverse nature-related activities (including DYI) in the context of co-creation and engagement;
- Raise awareness through exchange about nature, its preservation and a sustainable way of living;
- Collect and build concrete objects made of natural materials;
- Collect ideas and preferences of participants for future nature neighborhood activities (e.g. further events and workshops);
- Include recommendations for future Kirchberg schools.
Through the Wild Wild Wald project, our aim was to connect the inhabitants and neighbors of Kirchberg with a feeling of the nearby Grünewald forest. Although the forest is in a walking distance of the residential area, it seems that only few inhabitants are aware of its existence.
When designing this intergenerational project, we decided to put the ideas of togetherness and nature in its core. We wanted for people of different ages, including youth, young families with kids and the elderly to come together in the Kirchberg forest to exchange knowledge and to discover nature through different activities: discovering hidden paths like explorers of the new lands, learning about birds, trees, berries and building with your own hands using natural materials!
And this is how we did it…
Kick-off BBQ at the Quartierstuff
We partnered up with Fonds Kirchberg at a local BBQ to explain the project, promote the activities of the Œuvre and the ImpACT scheme, pre-register participants, to define other needs & ideate about the activities.
Wild Wild Wald Forest Workshop
Together with the Ministère de l’Environnement, du Climat et du Développement durable, Administration de la nature et des forêts, we co-created a ‘map’ of the forest (perception vs reality) & learned about nature, plants, and animals. We also created a mandala out of natural materials and collected materials for the next workshop.
Little Wild Wald Workshop
We partnered up with Food for Your Senses to design a second workshop dedicated to kids which involved crafts based on natural materials from the forest, and it was facilitated by a Creative Coach Christine Homolko.
